Life Cycle Assessment of Molded Pulp and Plastic Packaging Trays
Packaging materials account for a large share of household waste, making environmentally optimized packaging increasingly important. Molded pulp products are attracting attention as sustainable alternatives to conventional plastic packaging due to their potential to reduce carbon emissions and fossil resource consumption. In addition, the implementation of the European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) from August 2026 is expected to accelerate the transition toward recyclable and fiber-based packaging materials.
This study applies life cycle assessment (LCA) to compare the environmental performance of molded pulp trays with plastic packaging. While previous research demonstrated the potential of molded pulp as a plastic substitute, this study further examines both the environmental benefits and trade-offs using an integrated environmental impact assessment approach.

Rethinking Fiber: How Packaging is Moving Beyond Wood Pulp
This presentation explores how moving beyond a wood-centric approach to fiber sourcing can create broader opportunities for the packaging industry. By utilizing regionally available feedstocks including agricultural byproducts and other underutilized fiber resources manufacturers can strengthen supply chain resilience, create new economic opportunities in outside the traditional wood fiber communities, reduce transportation dependence, and expand access to sustainable packaging production in regions where traditional pulp resources are limited.
